Mātaitai reserves<\/SPAN><\/P> Mātaitai reserves are developed and managed by tangata whenua. They recognise and provide for:<\/SPAN><\/P> the special relationship between tangata whenua and their traditional fishing grounds<\/SPAN><\/P><\/LI> non-commercial customary fishing.<\/SPAN><\/P><\/LI><\/UL> Mātaitai reserves allow:<\/SPAN><\/P> customary fishing<\/SPAN><\/P><\/LI> recreational fishing without needing a permit.<\/SPAN><\/P><\/LI><\/UL> Mātaitai reserves don't:<\/SPAN><\/P> allow commercial fishing (unless reinstated by a regulation)<\/SPAN><\/P><\/LI> allow landing of commercial catch or holding pots<\/SPAN><\/P><\/LI> affect commercial fishing vessel activities like transiting and mooring<\/SPAN><\/P><\/LI> affect recreational fishing rules unless there are bylaws in place<\/SPAN><\/P><\/LI> control whitebait fishing<\/SPAN><\/P><\/LI> affect access to beaches and rivers<\/SPAN><\/P><\/LI> change restrictions on access to private land.<\/SPAN><\/P><\/LI><\/UL> Mātaitai reserves may have bylaws<\/SPAN><\/P> Some mātaitai reserves have bylaws that tangata kaitiaki/tiaki (guardians) use to manage non-commercial fishing.
