<idAbs>This layer contains results of a two-stage environmental classification of NZ lakes in which variables were subjectively chosen for their known roles in driving variation in the biological characteristics of lakes. This project attempted to deal with the discrimination of variation at different scales by developing a composite multivariate classification of lakes as follows. A single primary level of classification detail groups the entire domain (i.e. all NZ lakes) into seven classes based on variables that are assumed to be correlated (or theoretically responsible for) variation between lakes at the national scale. Each of these primary level classes are then further subdivided using a different, or possibly augmented, set of variables that were assumed to be correlated with (or responsible for) variation within the primary classes. A first version of this classification is described in a NIWA report (Snelder 2006). The classification presented here is a version that was updated in 2008 after some small lakes were excluded, but new documentation describing the updated version is still awaited. Snelder, T. <statement>This classification of the environmental charactristics of NZ's lakes was created using two stage mutivariate classification of enviornmental data as listed in the documentation referenced in the abstract. Classification entities consisted of 3820 lakes greater than 1 ha in size. These were classified initially into seven groups using conventional agglomerative clustering, based on the following environmental attributes: lake depth (log transformed), lake area (log transformed), December temperature, December solar radiation, maximum lake fetch (log transformed), and average summer windspeed. Two secondary classifications were then defined for lakes within each of the primary (7-class) classification groups, the first focussing on more detailed descriptions of environmental variables characterising their natural state, and the second also including variables describing contemporary human influences. Variables used to define the natural state classification described the cover of Nothofagus forest in the upstream catchment, catchment glacier extent, the average hardness of rocks in the upstream catchment, the proportion of peat in the upstream catchment, the average catchment slope, the average annual temperature of the catchment, the shortest distance from the lake to the coast, and the estimated lake residence time. Groups were defined at varying levels of classification detail giving 21, 32, 67 and 123 groups respectively. Variables used to define the current state classification included several of the same variables used to describe natural character, but were augmented by two descriptors of catchment landuse. Together they described the cover of Nothofagus forest in the upstream catchment, catchment glacier extent, the proportion of peat in the upstream catchment, the proportion of pastoral cover in the upstream catchment, the proportion of urban cover in the upstream catchment, the average catchment slope, the average annual temperature of the catchment, the shortest distance from the lake to the coast, and the estimated lake residence time. Groups were again defined at varying levels of classification detail giving 12, 18, 55 and 84 groups respectively.. </statement>
