description: | This layer contains results of a two-stage environmental classification of NZ lakes in which variables were subjectively chosen for their known roles in driving variation in the biological characteristics of lakes. This project attempted to deal with the discrimination of variation at different scales by developing a composite multivariate classification of lakes as follows. A single primary level of classification detail groups the entire domain (i.e. all NZ lakes) into seven classes based on variables that are assumed to be correlated (or theoretically responsible for) variation between lakes at the national scale. Each of these primary level classes are then further subdivided using a different, or possibly augmented, set of variables that were assumed to be correlated with (or responsible for) variation within the primary classes. A first version of this classification is described in a NIWA report (Snelder 2006). The classification presented here is a version that was updated in 2008 after some small lakes were excluded, but new documentation describing the updated version is still awaited. Snelder, T. (2006). Definition of a multivariate classification of New Zealand lakes. NIWA Client Report CHC2006-084 prepared for the Department of Conservation. |
